Dilbert's story:
Dilbert arrived at Wayside December 29, 2021 as a stray. He appeared to have been on his own for quite some time, and had a severe corneal ulcer that needed immediate attention. Due to the quick action of Wayside's veterinary team, a successful removal of the eye was performed, and he made a full recovery.
As part of Wayside's staff, I saw Dilbert come into the shelter, and knew he needed my help. I volunteered to take him into medical foster, partly as a selfish need for comfort. At the same time, my father was in critical care and quickly declining. Shortly thereafter on January 25 2022, my dad lost his years-long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis and Dementia. Even though he was very ill himself, Dilbert helped me with every step of the grieving process and became a forever part of my family. He feels like he has always been here. His favorite things include his cat brother (Beaker), shredded cheese, chest scratches, minature stuffies, squirrel chasing, and invading everyone's personal space. In 2023, Dilbert became a certified psyciatric service dog, bringing comfort to anyone who may be struggling. This certification allows him to visit individuals at the VA, nursing homes, children's hospitals, and social service agencies. Based on his sweet and silly disposition, one would never know what Dilbert endured. He is healthy enough to not only live the life of a normal dog, but even to participate in Strutt With Your Mutt!
My father was a lifelong animal advocate and Navy veteran. In addition, I myself am a survivor with PTSD. This year, Dilbert and I will not only be raising money for Wayside, but "Strutting" in my dad's honor and for all those struggling with mental health. Please consider making a donation today to support me in my race to help the homeless animals!
