• A smart phone or computer that can do a Zoom or FaceTime meeting

• A pet carrier to safely transport your cat home or a leash and collar for your dog

1. Visit the website to identify which animal you are interested in adopting. Please note the name of the animal.
2. Call 816-986-4426  and leave a voice mail message with the following information: your name, a phone number where we can reach you between 9am-5pm, the name of the animal, the type of animal (dog, cat, rabbit. Please state your phone number twice, slowly, and clearly. Please state if you are wanting a virtual or in-person pet adoption. 
3. An Adoptions Counselor will return your voice mail message within 48 hours to complete the Adoptions Survey and answer any initial questions. If you do not answer this return call, we will move on to the next person interested in the animal. This is due to the high volume calls we are receiving.  
4. Upon completion of the Adoption Survey conversation, the adoption counselor may recommend a virtual meet-n-greet with the pet as well.
5. If you decide to pursue the adoption, your adoption counselor will walk you through our virtual adoption process which includes completing all paperwork, signing, and payment processing online. Then we will schedule a time for you to pick up your new pet at Wayside, while following CDC guidelines. 
6. You take the pet home! 

Items to Note:

• Adoptions are on a first call, first serve basis. We are scheduling adoption appointments based on your voicemail message and our ability to reach you on the phone number you provide. Due to the high volume of adoption calls we are receiving, we are not able to play telephone tag. 
• If we call someone regarding an adoption inquiry and they do not answer, we move on to the next person who is interested in the animal.
• Sometimes animals come on and off the website. This can be for a variety of reasons and we appreciate your flexibility in understanding these reasons. Reasons for this could include: an animal is adopted, an animal already has a pet adoption appointment schedule for their adoption, an animal becomes sick and needs veterinary attention, an animal is adopted and the adopter decides to return it, etc.
• A typical virtual adoption appointment with the Adoption Counselor will last approximately 60 minutes. During this appointment we will review the detailed medical and behavioral notes with you, in addition to answering any specific questions you might have.
• If you have a resident dog, the Adoptions Counselor will determine whether or not a dog-to-dog meeting with the shelter dog and your dog is needed. These meetings will happen at Wayside Waifs. Social distancing protocols must be followed by all parties, including wearing face masks, hand hygiene, and social distancing. 
• No animals can be put "on hold."
• Due to the high volume of adoption calls we are receiving, we are not able to play telephone tag. If we call someone regarding an adoption inquiry and they do not answer, we move on to the next person who is interested in the animal. If you leave a message and do not receive a call back, the animal you are interested in has been adopted.
• When picking up your pet from the shelter, please look for the Virtual Pet Adoption Pick Up signage. Park in this designated area, stay in your care and call 816-761-8151 to let the staff know you have arrived for your scheduled appointment. They will bring your pet to your car. Please practice CDC guidelines by wearing a mask and social distancing.
